History

About

History of The Prescott Hotel

Named for the Colonel William Prescott, Commander at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Prescott Hotel was built in 1895 and is one of the oldest continuous lodging operations in the United States. In Boston, only The Parker House has been operating longer.

For 76 years, The Prescott Hotel has been managed by only two families. In 1927, Mr Hillary Morgan actually won the hotel in a backroom poker game and his family ran the business until 1995. Over that stretch of time it was operated as a hotel, flop house, lodging house, and short-term apartments. It was then sold to Steve and Judy Smith. After extensive renovations, yet always keeping the integrity of the original building in tact, it re-opened as the Prescott International Hotel and Hostel.

Some famous guests over the years have been John Lennon, the famous singer and songwriter of Beatles fame, in 1964, and several visits by President John F. Kennedy, when he was a student at nearby Harvard University.

We Hope you enjoy your stay and appreciate the work done to preserve this fine old hotel. With all its aches and pains, it is one of the most comfortable and historic small hotels in the country. We hope you agree.
